The Stargate Saga Continues, Atlantis Season 5 Hits DVD
Who would have thought the movie Stargate would turn into such an enormous franchise. It all began with the 1994 movie that starred Kurt Russell and James Spader, which became a monumental hit at the box office. Next up was Stargate SG-1, the television spin-off, which led to books, video games, comic books and subsequent television series, one of which was called Stargate: Atlantis. On June 30th, MGM Home Entertainment will bring you the final piece of the Stargate: Atlantis collection, the show’s final season on DVD.
Stargate: Atlantis began as a spin-off of Stargate SG-1. Two of the characters, Dr. Rodney McKay (David Hewlett) and Dr. Elizabeth Weir (Torri Higginson), were featured in both series. The military forces and civilian scientists that make up the Atlantis expedition travel to the Pegasus galaxy in search of the Lost City of Atlantis. Upon their arrival the team befriends the native Ancients but must fight a powerful enemy called the Wraith. Most of seasons one through four focus on their battle with the Wraith. In season five the leader of the Atlantis expedition, Colonel Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping), is replaced by Richard Woolsey (Robert Picardo). Teyla (Rachel Luttrell) has just given birth to Torren John and must balance her duties as a warrior and a mother. We also see the introduction of a group of Asgard who experiment on humans to prolong their lives.
The Stargate: Atlantis Season 5 DVD comes in a five-disc set. Those five discs contain all 20 episodes some of which come with optional commentary. You also get two DVD-exclusive extended episodes of “Vegas” and “Enemy at the Gate.” The list of featurettes includes “Mission Directive: Search and Rescue with Andy Mikita and Martin Gero,” “Showdown! Ronan v. Tyre,” “Bringing the Seed to Life,” “Mission Directive: Whispers with William Waring and Joseph Mallozzi,” “Tricks of the Trade: Submerging the Stargate,” “Joe Flanigan: A Conversation with the Colonel,” “Mission Directive: Tracker with William Waring and Carl Binder,” “Dr. Jackson Goes to Atlantis,” “Building a Humanoid with James Robbins and Martin Gero,” “Mission Directive: Brain Storm with Martin Gero,” “The Life and Death of Michael Kenmore,” “Stargate Atlantis Goes To Vegas” and “Inside the Stargate Costume Department.” There are also five photo galleries and two sets of deleted scenes.
The franchise is successful, so, odds are, any sci-fi fan will enjoy this DVD set. I may be skipping out on dropping the cash for this one personally, but spending the $49.98 on a belated Father’s Day gift is a possibility.
